Cragg's Two-Part Model

Contemporary art biennales play an important role in promoting cultural tourism and the creative economy. However, research on the determinants of expenditure among visitors to large-scale art events in developing countries remains limited. This study aims to examine the factors influencing expenditure among visitors to Thailand Biennale, Phuket 2025, drawing on tourism economics, push–pull motivation theory, and the experience economy concept. Data were collected from 401 visitors through a structured questionnaire between March and April 2026. Expenditure excluding accommodation costs was analyzed using Cragg’s Two-Part Model, comprising a Probit model and a Gamma Generalized Linear Model (GLM), due to the large number of zero expenditure observations and violations of the assumptions of the Tobit model. The results show that overnight stay had the strongest influence on expenditure, increasing the probability of having positive expenditure by approximately 36.62 percentage points and increasing expenditure by approximately THB 14,268. Foreign visitors spent approximately THB 13,524 more than Thai visitors. Visitors whose primary purpose was to attend the Biennale were more likely to incur expenditure; however, conditional on positive expenditure, they spent approximately THB 8,485 less. Both art-related push and pull motivations were statistically insignificant. The findings suggest that increasing visitor numbers alone may not be sufficient to enhance the economic benefits generated by the event. Strategies should therefore promote overnight stays, expand the international tourist market, and strengthen linkages between the Biennale and local businesses to increase the economic value of cultural tourism

Keywords: Tourist expenditure, Overnight stay, Push–pull motivations, Cultural tourism, Cragg’s Two-Part Model.
